Deceived by the sun

I had something else in mind before I started writing what I am writing now. However, I have tried to remember what it was and it is just not coming to my head. So, I have changed the topic. I will talk about the weather. (fun!!!)

I have not written about the weather since I came. But every person I have spoken to and has asked me about the weather has found out that I do not like this weather one bit...I may have mentioned it in passing in the blog.

Anyway, the weather has become a bit better. By better I mean that yes, it is cold, but it is bearable....(its funny because before I came here, I would be shivering in this weather!)

For the past week, we have had excellent weather, it has been warm and so that meant that for the first time since the beginning of the year, I could wear my 'old skools' and not have boots up till my knees. It has been awesome! The sun has also made guest appearances and made the place look a bit lively!

Today, however, as I was getting ready for class, I did not know what to wear. So I looked out the window, and I saw that the sun was shining. I decided that I would wear a nice Jacket that would flow with my headwrap and so that in the end, I would be a bit warm. I also wore a scarf just for the sake of the look..it was really working with what I had on.

So, I got all my things together:

  • books
  • bag
  • room keys
  • stationery

I thought I had the lip gloss in my pocket and so I left the room and walked out of the dorm with my friend.

Once I stepped out, the wind blew.

I have been to Chicago and the wind there is violent. It can get so hard and make you take a few steps back. However, the wind here is worse. It is silent and very polite but it carries an invisible cold hand that gets into your body, grips your bones and blood, and all it makes you want to do is scream because of how hard it holds you.
If you are not in the right clothes...it holds you really tight! Now, I was not in the right clothes and so I really felt it. I had no time to go back and change so I braved it and went to class where it was warm. (phew thank God!)

As I went through the day, I realized that many people were deceived by the sun like I was, and they were excited as they wore nice looking, not-so-warm clothes. They still looked good but they had to wear heavy jackets on top just so that they could stay warm.

The sun lied to us!!!But I learnt something.

Yes, they planned to look good, and show off their dresses and cute tops but it was too windy/cold to show them off, but they still wore what they had on. All they did was put on a jacket so that they would not freeze.
Many times, life throws a thousand curve balls at us and we want to stop doing what we were doing because we are discouraged. However, just like my friends who did not remove their beautiful clothes, you and I should learn to take that curve and make it a scarf.

My friends still looked good, and they still wore their clothes. They did not let the wind discourage them.
Its easy to think and say that we should have checked the weather to know the temperature. Yes, that may have been so, but we did not and since we did not, we had a lesson to learn:

  • to check the weather updates next time!(am just saying)

but most of all,

  • to learn to deal with what the weather throws at us.

Just like the weather, life has its own pattern and we may not always see what is coming out way. But when it comes, what will I do with it. What will you do with it?....Ama kweli.
